Tomoya Yamada
Shakuhachi… the traditional
Japanese bamboo instrument
Born and raised in Japan, Tomoya began the shakuhachi at the age of 14, and he started learning from a Buddhist monk Kensei Mizuno of Amida-Temple in Hakone, Japan. He, however, did not follow the typical way of studying shakuhachi in which a student apprentices a master and become a member of the sect. In stead, he learned by doing while wandering in mountains, making songs at lake shores, and playing in town where people gather. His travels brought him throughout Japan, U.S, Canada, England, and Italy. He performed at various locations during his college years in NY and Canada. After returning to Japan he started performing at concerts, weddings, and live shows. He currently performs with a German composer/pianist, Tommy Bauer at his own restaurant in Kisarazu, Japan
Tomoya Yamada is a naturalist, martial artist,
canoeist, graduate of Paul Smith’s College in NY. He is currently a owner of a
restaurant/bar called Hanako’s where he serves Japanese style food, beverage,
and hosts various musical events in Kisarazu, Japan. He has released his first
album in May 2007 in an attempt to put together his previous experiences, and
from now on, he starts from here.
